A Q&A Guide for Tattoo Artists and Studios to increase bookings outside of Instagram

Max Wheatcroft • Jan 09, 2024

If you're a tattoo artist, you'll be pleased to know there are ways of generating enquiries outside of instagram. In this week's Q&A blog, we go through the most effective, alternative digital marketing strategies that we use for our clients outside of instagram as well as highlighting the importance of diversifying your marketing efforts as a means of long-term consistency and stability when it comes to generating new clients.

Q: "What does "diversification" mean when it comes to digital marketing?"

A: "Diversification in digital marketing refers to the practice of using a variety of channels, platforms, and strategies to reach and engage with a target audience. Instead of relying solely on one method or platform (cough, Instagram, cough), businesses diversify their digital marketing efforts to minimise risk and maximise their reach and longevity."

Q: "Why should tattoo artists and studios consider diversifying their digital marketing beyond Instagram?"
A: "Tattoo artists and studios should consider diversifying their digital marketing beyond Instagram for several crucial reasons. While Instagram is a popular platform for visual content and has been a cornerstone for tattoo-related promotion, over-reliance on ANY single platform poses risks. Diversification opens doors to new client demographics and provides a safety net against algorithm changes or platform saturation. Both of which, in the context of Instagram specifically, have had a merciless effect on the tattoo industry, particularly with artists and studios that almost exclusively rely on it as a means of generating enquiries. Diversification is the safest way to protect yourself from platform versatility (like reach restrictions), while ensuring stability and consistency over a long-term time horizon."

Q: "What are the benefits of using alternative platforms for organic growth?"

A: "Alternative platforms offer fresh audiences, reduced competition, and varied content formats. This diversity enhances visibility, boosts organic reach, and fosters engagement, creating a more robust foundation for sustainable growth. Another benefit can be a lower CPA (cost per acquisition). When you advertise on less saturated platforms, the cost per acquisition tends to be lower as you're competing against fewer people. It's important to note that the CPA of any campaign on any platform (over time if left unchanged) will always steadily increase. This further reinforces the benefits of diversification."

Q: "Which platforms are recommended for consistent growth and new client enquiries?

A: "For consistent growth and new client enquiries, a comprehensive digital marketing strategy as a tattooer is crucial. I recommend leveraging Google AdWords for targeted paid advertising, optimising your tattoo studio website with keyword-rich content based on your style of tattooing to boost your organic website rankings, utilising Google My Business for local reach and reviews, incorporating Google Display Ads for visual engagement, and exploring TikTok Ads to tap into a diverse and active user base. This multi-platform approach ensures a broad online presence, effectively reaching potential clients at different stages of their online journey. We will be deep-diving into each of the above tattoo shop marketing strategies in our upcoming blogs, so keep an eye out to learn about the features, benefits and key insights you're going to want to know."

Q: "Are there other platforms outside of those you just mentioned that tattoo artists and studio owners could consider to diversify their marketing efforts?

A: "Yes, there are other but admittedly less effective platforms to consider. Pinterest can be a great way to put your portfolio in front of tattoo enthusiasts near you. Though it can be quite complex, it's certainly a platform to trial an ad campaign for, and like any campaign, judge it on the results it brings you. Other alternatives include Snapchat for temporary promotions, though it's worth noting, the audience quality on Snapchat (like TikTok) might not be the best if you want to target high-spending clients. A left-field one that you'll be really surprised to hear is actually Reddit! We've managed to generate enquiries for several clients of ours by searching for their style of tattoo on Google, finding a high-ranking Reddit thread relating to their style that was seeking recommendations, and commenting with a link to our client's website! One other option that can sometimes work but is unbelievably tedious, so I would only recommend it if your marketing budget was literally £0, is posting on local community forums or Facebook groups. Carefully consider again, though, the quality of enquiry you're going to be attracting from there.

All things considered, these are all things that can contribute to a diverse and effective marketing strategy."

Closing comments:

Though the number of enquiries you will currently be averaging from your organic reach and engagements on Instagram will likely have taken a pretty significant hit, particularly over the past 18 months, your diversification strategy should not be to abandon it completely. But rather to accommodate other lead generation strategies along side it. Meta (Facebook and Instagram) ad campaigns are still up there with the most powerful and effective digital marketing strategies that we currently use to generate bookings for our tattoo artist and tattoo studio clients. Meta's powerful, advanced targeting options allow us to put our client's portfolios in front of high-quality, high-converting clients, quickly and efficiently. Relying on getting there outside of paid ads, is where you're going to feel the crunch the hardest. None of us like to hear that, but that is how it is. Diversifying your digital marketing campaigns across multiple platforms will create longevity and stability for you as a tattoo artist or studio owner by having multiple lead generation portals. Embrace the diversity, engage authentically, and watch you and/or your studio's digital presence flourish.

With all of that being said, if you want to spend more of your time tattooing, and less of your time becoming a digital marketing guru, that is what we're here for. We'll leave the tattooing to you, you leave your digital marketing to us. Sound good?

We recently had the chance to visit the Hucknall studio of @ma9pie , a tattoo artist whose work has been captivating us for a lot of years. Ma9pie is a true artist by every definition of the word with an amazing back story. He doesn't just do amazing, large scale tattoos in record time, he's also a musician, creating his own music alongside these stunning pieces of art. But what grabbed our attention was his reputation for completing full back pieces and sleeves in just one day. That level of focus, artistic vision, and sheer physical stamina was something we wanted to experience in person. So, we dived on a train and spent a day with him at his studio and got to know the man behind the art. Check out the full interview below.

How to Properly Care for Your New Tattoo
28 Nov, 2023
Introduction: Getting a new tattoo is an exciting experience, but it's essential to remember that the care you provide for your tattoo after it's done plays a crucial role in its healing and long-term appearance. In this complete guide, we will explore the importance of tattoo aftercare , provide tips for proper aftercare, discuss essential aftercare products, and offer step-by-step instructions to ensure your tattoo heals beautifully. The Importance of Tattoo Aftercare Tattoo aftercare is not something to take lightly. Proper care during the healing process is vital to prevent infections, scarring, and ensure the longevity of your tattoo . By following the right aftercare routine, you can protect your investment and enjoy your tattoo for years to come. Understanding Tattoo Aftercare: What is Tattoo Aftercare? Tattoo aftercare refers to the steps you need to take to promote healing and prevent complications after getting a tattoo. It involves a combination of cleaning, moisturising, and protecting the tattooed area. Why is Tattoo Aftercare Necessary? When you get a tattoo, the process involves creating small wounds in your skin, injecting ink into the dermis layer. Proper aftercare helps these wounds heal, reduces the risk of infection, and ensures the tattoo retains its vibrancy and clarity. Tattoo Aftercare Tips: Immediate Aftercare: Immediately after getting your tattoo , your tattoo artist will clean the area and apply a thin layer of ointment. To continue the healing process properly, follow these steps: Leave the bandage on for a few hours to protect the tattoo from bacteria and dirt. Gently wash the tattoo with a mild, fragrance-free soap and lukewarm water to remove any blood, ointment, or plasma. Pat the tattoo dry with a clean, soft cloth or let it air dry. Avoid rubbing the area. Apply a thin layer of tattoo aftercare cream or ointment recommended by your tattoo artist. This will keep the tattoo moisturised and protect it from infection. Repeat this process two to three times a day for the first few days. Long-Term Aftercare: After the initial healing phase, which usually takes about two weeks, it's crucial to continue caring for your tattoo. Follow these steps: Wash your tattoo gently with mild soap and lukewarm water twice a day. Avoid scrubbing or using abrasive materials. Pat the tattoo dry and let it air dry for a few minutes. Apply a thin layer of fragrance-free moisturizer or tattoo aftercare cream to keep the skin hydrated and prevent itching. Avoid exposing your tattoo to direct sunlight, chlorine, saltwater, or excessive sweating until it's fully healed. Wear loose, breathable clothing to avoid friction and irritation. If you must be outside, apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 to protect your tattoo from fading and sun damage. Avoid picking, scratching, or peeling any scabs that form. Let them fall off naturally to prevent scarring. Tattoo Aftercare Products: Tattoo Aftercare Cream: Tattoo aftercare creams are specifically formulated to promote healing, reduce inflammation, and provide essential nutrients to the skin. Look for products that are fragrance-free, hypoallergenic, and recommended by professional tattoo artists. These creams can effectively moisturise the tattooed area and aid in the healing process. Tattoo Aftercare Ointment: Tattoo aftercare ointments create a protective barrier on the tattooed area, keeping it moisturised and preventing bacteria from entering the wound. Choose ointments that are petroleum-free, as petroleum can suffocate the skin and hinder the healing process. These ointments provide an extra layer of protection and help soothe the skin. Other Essential Tattoo Aftercare Products: In addition to aftercare creams and ointments, there are a few other products that can aid in the healing process: Fragrance-free, mild soap: Use a gentle soap to clean your tattoo without causing irritation. Moisturizer: Look for a fragrance-free, hypoallergenic moisturizer to keep your tattoo hydrated. Sunscreen: Protect your tattoo from fading and sun damage by applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen. Non-stick bandages: If your tattoo needs additional protection, use non-stick bandages to cover it temporarily. Tattoo Aftercare Instructions: Step-by-Step Guide to Tattoo Aftercare Follow your tattoo artist's immediate aftercare instructions, including keeping the bandage on for a few hours. Gently wash your tattoo with mild soap and lukewarm water, pat it dry, and apply a thin layer of aftercare cream or ointment. Repeat the cleaning and moisturising process two to three times a day for the first few days. After the initial healing phase, continue washing your tattoo twice a day and moisturising it with fragrance-free lotion. Protect your tattoo from direct sunlight, chlorine, saltwater, and excessive sweating until it's fully healed. Avoid picking or scratching any scabs that form, as this can lead to scarring. If you notice any signs of infection, such as excessive redness, swelling, or pus, consult a doctor immediately. Common Mistakes to Avoid To ensure the proper healing of your tattoo, avoid these common mistakes: Over-washing or using harsh soaps: This can dry out your tattoo and delay the healing process. Stick to gentle, fragrance-free soaps. Applying too much ointment or cream: Use a thin layer to avoid clogging the pores or suffocating the skin. Exposing your tattoo to direct sunlight: UV rays can cause fading and damage to your tattoo. Protect it with clothing or sunscreen. Picking or scratching scabs: This can lead to scarring and affect the final appearance of your tattoo. Let the scabs fall off naturally. Conclusion: Proper aftercare is crucial to ensure your new tattoo heals beautifully and maintains its vibrancy in the long run. By following the tips, using the right aftercare products, and adhering to the step-by-step instructions provided, you can minimise the risk of complications and enjoy your tattoo for years to come. Remember, when in doubt, always consult your tattoo artist or a medical professional for advice. Happy healing!
